Atenism may an ancient form of Deism, meaning that God reveals himself through Nature and Reason instead of Revealed Religion. This could be the centerpiece in understanding Atenist philosophy, that it is not a religion which bases itself on revelation, rituals, myths, special rules and regulations, and holy books. In this case Atenism may be classified as Solar Deism, where God especially reveals himself through the life-giving Sun. Key here is the "Life-giving Sun"; thus Aten is alive and we as living beings are bound to Him because we are alive. The inert matter and non-life giving energies in the Universe are NOT God; only "Life-energy" which is bound within Aten and extends from Aten to His living creation. Atenism is NOT Pantheism, which is the belief that the universe is God. God or Aten is within the universe; He is life and gives life with his Holy Light. If Aten is an Intelligent being; then divine revelation is possible which would mean that Atenism is Solar Theism in which the Intelligent life force radiating from the Sun can communicate with His living creation or whom He chooses.

There is one Supreme God.
He ought to be worshipped.
Virtue and piety are the chief parts of divine worship.
We ought to be sorry for our sins and repent of them
Divine goodness doth dispense rewards and punishments both in this life and after it.

– Lord Herbert of Cherbury, The Antient Religion of the Gentiles, and Causes of Their Errors, pp. 3–4, quoted in John Orr, English Deism, p. 62
