I'm Apachama, and I'm a student of philosophy out in the wilds of Wales. I'm an atheist; but one of my big interests os trying to track back the history of monotheism. I find my interest in monotheism is at the two extremes of age: Baha'i with its doctrine of progressive revelation seems like a very progressive, interesting take on the whole idea. If God is progressing in what he tells us, then one should go for the most up-to-date message available, no? On the other hand, if all monotheism can be traced back to an original dispensation, then what one should look for is the earliest expression possible. As far as that goes, there's Atenism and Zoroastrianism. Zoroastrianism is probably the saner approach as we know more about it. But I think that Atenism has a good general principle, and that it allows for a very good spirituality. Atenism deserves a new try. I'm glad to see you guys are doing so. |

The problem with Zoroastrianism is that its not really Monotheistic. It's Dualistic. The belief in Two Gods. (except for the offshoot sect called Zurvanism). Sure the Good God wins at the end of times, but the Evil God will still always exist. There was another Iranian tradition that was Monotheistic though. The Massagatae tribe worshipped only one God, supposedly the Iranian Sun god Hvar. They may have believed in others but it's not recorded. I always found that odd actually, because it was a "Sun god." Could there have been a distant connection with Atenism? I don't know!! ![]() There was another tribe too that worshipped the Sun god only, but I forget their name... anyways though...Atenism is definately the oldest Monotheism on record...the most ancient one that we know of. didnt Amenhotep III or some king before him start the beginnings of the Aten cult? It was fully developed as an independant Monotheism in Akhenaten's reign as Pharoah, but the worship of Aten I think goes back much further.... |
